Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Gray ME
257 PM EDT Sun May 11 2025

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure crests over the region tonight allowing for
breezy winds to subside. High pressure will maintain mostly dry
conditions through mid week with high temperatures in the 70s
across the interior and in the 60s along the coast. Moisture
will increase through the second half of the week bringing
chances for showers and possibly some afternoon thunderstorms. A
trough approaches late in the week bringing higher chances for
showers over next weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Visible satellite imagery this Sunday afternoon shows clear
skies over the area with surface high pressure located over
Upstate NY and low pressure located well to the northeast of the
Canadian Maritimes. This pressure gradient combined with surface
heating/mixing is resulting in gusty northwesterly winds with
some gusts up to around 35 mph at this hour. Current
temperatures range from the lower 50s across the north to the
middle 60s south. It will continue to be a dry and sunny late
afternoon and early evening with winds gradually diminishing.

Surface high pressure will crest over the region tonight before
drifting offshore by Monday morning. This combined with the loss
of daytime heating will allow for diminishing winds overnight
and this combined with low dew points will set the stage for
radiational cooling. The only potential fly in the ointment will
be some increasing middle to upper level clouds after midnight,
especially across the north and mountains. The expectation is
that despite these clouds, low temperatures will still manage
to fall into the lower to middle 30s within most areas where the
growing season has begun. As a result, went ahead and issued a
frost advisory in locations where confidence is highest for
frost formation. Some frost is still possible over southern
areas where there is no frost advisory and a frost/freeze is
likely over the north where the season has not yet begun.

&&

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Monday will feature continued mostly sunny skies and dry
conditions as high pressure exits to the east. High temperatures
will mainly be into the 60s to middle 70s from north to south
but southerly flow will keep coastal and eastern locations a
little cooler into the 50s.

Return flow will result in some increased cloudiness on Monday
night with low temperatures ranging from around 40 across the
north to 50 south.

&&

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The long term period will start off with mid level ridging centered
over southeast Canada with a closed low over the southeast. The
ridge will likely maintain dry conditions Tuesday and Wednesday with
humidity starting to increase as the closed low migrates
northeastward. The closed low will transition to an open wave as it
crosses southern New England Thursday and Friday. This will bring
more moisture into the region, while organized forcing for ascent
will be lacking. Chances for showers will increase Thursday with
additional chances for showers and perhaps some thunderstorms Friday.
As the open wave moves offshore Friday another closed low will be
approaching from the the Great Lakes region. This system will keep
chances for showers in the forecast through next weekend. While
there are chances for showers every day Thursday through the end of
the period, no one day looks to be a washout with extended dry
periods possible. High temperatures will generally climb into the
70s each day across the interior with onshore winds keeping coastal
areas in the 60s. The uptick in humidity will likely become
noticeable Thursday and Friday when dew points approach the low to
mid 60s.

&&

.AVIATION /19Z SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Short Term...VFR conditions are expected through at least Monday
night. There is a low probability (<30%) for some patchy valley
FG late tonight at KHIE, KLEB, and KCON. Northwesterly winds
will become light and variable tonight through Monday morning
before becoming southerly later Monday afternoon at 10-15 kts.

Long Term...Mainly VFR Tuesday through Wednesday. Increasing
moisture during the second half of the week will bring chances
for night time fog and chances for showers with perhaps some
thunderstorms Friday.

&&

.MARINE...
Short Term...Wind and seas will remain below SCA thresholds
through period as high pressure drifts over the waters.

Long Term...Winds and seas remain below SCA thresholds through
the period. High pressure east of the waters will maintain
persistent onshore flow.
